    • There is an error when discussing the Highlander Hybrid. You see, the conventional MPG figures you quoted are for the four cylinder Toyota Highlander, which does not feature a turbo. The conventional V6 is rated at 17 city and 25 highway. The hybrid is a huge improvement in town, but not on the highway.

    • For people who drive in city and highway 50/50 15k miles a year, hybrid safe about $500 per year. With battery cost replacement about $2500 for prius/corolla 1.8L, in 5 years you pay for it for 15 years battery lifespan. So overall in 15 years, most people will safe about $5000 in 15 years. Besides that, less brake to replace, less wear on the engine, and drivetrain is bullet proof. Much more Prius 400k miles or more than any Toyota cars.

  3. They hybrid system rarely wears out in these, nor does the rear diff. The motor/generator/planetary gear set is mechanically very simple and robust (Weber Auto has fantastic vids). The electrics are the only real complex part of these. Of course the batteries are the biggest issue with all hybrids and electric cars, especially as they age.

    There is no way a V6 Highlander is getting 20 MPG strictly in town, especially if it is stop and go (mayyyybe my gramma going to church). It is definitely a waste of money to purchase a Highlander Hybrid if a decent portion of miles are highway. The HiHy is for strictly town driving if you want to even come close to recoup the upfront cost.

    Scotty missed some of the other bigger costs that the HiHy has. The AC compressor is electric and costs quite a bit more to replace then a traditional compressor. Also the brake booster system is complex and expensive as the engine is not always running and needs to provide power assist in those situations.

    It is anecdotal, but my Highlander Hybrid has been used for years on a paper route and also a few years as Uber/Lyft. Almost completely city miles, and not easy ones at that. I am the second owner, purchased at a little over 100K miles. It now has 264K miles and has been fantastic thus far. Due to having the 1099 jobs, I have to keep tabs of all costs, so I can say with confidence, and compared with other vehicles I have owned, this Highlander has saved me enough money to have just recouped it’s purchase price (my price used, not new). I know that the battery cannot be long for this world at this age, but I am getting ready to find a replacement vehicle soon.

  5. I have this RAV4 and I can tell everything that will go wrong. As for oil problem, I’ve had this car since 2008 and the check oil light has never gone off. It burns 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. Last time it ran out of oil was after Toyota did the recall and told me I did not have an oil burning problem. They charged me a couple grand to replace seals and gaskets the might have been leaking oil (I told them there is no oil on my driveway nor under where I park my car and I change my own oil). 2000 miles later, no oil on the dipstick and 2 quarts to bring it to full. No check oil light. They got paid, but they didn’t fix my problems. Jerks!
    There all other things wrong or most likely to fail on this car including, rack & pinion (there’s one next to me ready to go in), drive axle (replaced twice in a year), Automatic transmission (replaced a year or two ago), Variable Valve Timing gear assembly a year or two before the tranmission. I’ve been feeding it oil for so many years I can’t remember. 14 recalls on this particular model. I love the car though. lol. Nicest I ever had. It has a CD player. I used to own an 1976 AMC Gremlin. I almost drove it into Miraflores Lake in the Panama Canal. A story for another time.

  9. It’s funny you talk about engines that were made with incorrect piston rings and burnt oil in the combustion cycle. My 2012 Acura MDX SH-AWD had the 3.7 ltr V6 I bought in 2014 with 23K miles and it always burned oil. I lost control on a snowy mountain road in November 2018 and it was totaled with 135,000 miles on it by the insurance company. In 2019 I received a letter from Honda (Acura) saying that the factory used the wrong piston rings in my engine and they were extending my Acura warranty to 100,000 mile to compensate me, LOL.
